Green, Gym engage in Twitter war over PFT

This article was originally published in The Notebook. In August 2020, The Notebook became Chalkbeat Philadelphia.

Philadelphia City Councilwoman and education activist Helen Gym took issue with a quote from School Reform Commission member Bill Green in a recent Newsworks article about the District quickly settling contract negotiations with two unions while the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers has gone without a contract since mid-2013.

In the Newsworks piece, Green said, “The SRC, or a majority thereof, took the position that we are not going to settle with PFT until we settle with CASA and 32BJ who were there for the school children of Philadelphia when the school children of Philadelphia needed them.”

Gym went on to criticize the SRC for failing to fill vacant teaching positions, which presumably would have been easier if the PFT’s contract wasn’t frozen.
