Enon holds meetings on school closings

This article was originally published in The Notebook. In August 2020, The Notebook became Chalkbeat Philadelphia.

Representatives of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Northwest Philadelphia have been running a series of meetings since mid-January at schools targeted for closure to get feedback on the District’s closing plan.

District officials say that Enon leaders will provide a report with alternative recommendations to the School Reform Commission before the SRC hearings that are scheduled to begin Feb. 21.

The District is allowing Enon to hold these meetings in schools; a District spokesperson said, "We welcome that conversation," adding that the District encourages alternative proposals "that get us to the same end."

District officials say they expect their plan to eventually save $28 million annually from closing 37 buildings but say they will not realize those savings until after the initial transition year.

As of Friday, Enon has held or scheduled meetings for 24 out of 44 schools slated for closure or relocation. Coming up next week are meetings for Germantown High, Lamberton High, Leeds Middle, Overbrook Elementary, Pepper Middle, Reynolds Elementary, Shaw Middle, Taylor Elementary, and Abigail Vare Elementary.

The meeting schedule provided by Enon follows.

UPDATE: The meeting at Overbrook Elementary has been rescheduled to Feb. 5.
