Nutter mum on Ackerman

This article was originally published in The Notebook. In August 2020, The Notebook became Chalkbeat Philadelphia.

The day after he returned from an extended working trip to Rio de Janeiro, Mayor Nutter declined to directly weigh in on the ongoing drama surrounding Philadelphia Superintendent of Schools Arlene Ackerman.

Jeff Cole of Fox29 News caught up with Nutter in West Philadelphia on Friday and pressed the mayor – unsuccessfully – for a clear statement on Ackerman.

The mayor’s press secretary, Mark McDonald, told the Notebook only that Ackerman’s future is "between the [School Reform Commission] and its employee."

McDonald also said that he was not aware of "any change in status" of Nutter’s support for SRC Chairman Robert Archie, whom Nutter appointed.

Earlier this week, state Sen. Shirley Kitchen called for Archie’s removal as SRC chair.
