Shortchanged … on small schools

Unlike brand-new small schools, converted small schools did not get:

  • a full year of planning
  • a principal hired a year in advance
  • the ability to assemble a faculty that was in tune with the mission
  • freedom to adapt the standardized curriculum
  • increased teacher allotment to help fully develop the school’s electives, theme, and mission
  • the option to start up one grade at a time
  • buildings that were constructed or renovated to suit the school’s unique needs
